Grade 9 Compulsory Subjects

Choice of Subjects for Grade 10 to Grade 12

Selection of subjects by Grade 9 Learners for the FET Phase depart from the compulsory learning subjects offered in Grade 9 class. For Grades 10 - 12, Academy provides for 2 learning Areas of Specialization, i.e. COMMERCE and SCIENCE educational streams.

Mathematical Literacy subject is not offered in the school (all Grades),
Information Technology subject is a new subject added to the school in the FET Phase,
Selection of subjects in the FET is informed by the Learner's pursued path of a particular profession and/or potential studies in the higher institutions of learning.

Subjects' choice and career pathing

Grade 9 is an important year in the life of every South African learner, and learner needs to start thinking about possible careers during this grade.

  • Parents/Guardians are encouraged to discuss the various options with their children to ensure the appropriate subject choices are made.
  • Parents/Guardians can assist their children to make subject choices depending on what the child is interested in doing or the kind of career the child may be considering.
  • Further education and Training Colleges and Universities require learners to have particular combinations of subjects in order to study further.
  • Choosing the right subjects is only the first step to getting into a university, university of technology or FET College.
  • Learners also have to have certain levels of achievement to meet the entry requirements for that particular qualification.
  • The bottom line is that the better the Learners perform in all their subjects, the more options they have.
  • When Learner applies for further studies at a higher educational institution, they will also consider his/her Grade 11 subject marks before he/she had written the National Senior Certificate.
  • In order to obtain a National Senior Certificate a minimum of 7 subjects is required for a learner to complete qualification.
